EDUCATIONAL
PHILOSOPHY It is our belief that the primary objectives of education and life are to restore the image of God through man and bring him back to the perfection in which he was created. We believe that all youth should be permitted the privilege of a Christian education that they may become laborers together with God. Our conviction is that true education must provide for intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and physical development and especially a personal relationship with, and a commitment to, Christ. Our aim as a Christian educational institution is to provide a course of study suitable for a variety of students which will speak to the whole person, enabling them to fulfill their individual potential. We wish to provide training which will fit them for a technological society and to inculcate principles which will enable them to be good citizens of both this world and the next. As a private Christian Academy, we further feel that any student unwilling to maintain these philosophies should apply elsewhere for more compatible schooling. WE BELIEVE in a personal, loving Father and in Jesus Christ - the eternal, divine Son of God as our Savior. WE BELIEVE in the Holy Spirit, the Divine Comforter, and in His power to transform and uplift the lives of believers. WE BELIEVE in the imminent return of Jesus to reward the righteous and to bring judgment upon the wicked. WE BELIEVE that the Bible is the inspired, infallible Word of God by which we will all be judged, and by which we judge all claims and doctrines. WE BELIEVE in the Biblical seventh day Sabbath (Saturday) as given in the Ten Commandments and as observed by Jesus and the apostles. WE BELIEVE that a person is saved by grace through faith, which itself is a gift from God. WE BELIEVE that works of righteousness and obedience are simply the natural fruits of a victorious Savior living in a believer. WE BELIEVE in the gifts of the Spirit, including the spirit of prophecy. WE BELIEVE in discarding unhealthfull practices such as the use of intoxicants, stimulants, tobacco, unclean meats, etc. WE BELIEVE that the followers of Jesus should manifest true Christian modesty in dress and deportment, and should shun all debasing, worldly amusements. WE BELIEVE that immortality and eternal life are gifts of God and are received only through Christ. WE BELIEVE in supporting the cause of God with our faithful tithes and offerings. WE BELIEVE in baptism by immersion, after the example of Jesus. These beliefs are a brief summary of the doctrines of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Since Wilson Junior Academy is a ministry of the church, these beliefs form the foundation of our teaching. While extending tolerance to all other perspectives, we uphold our beliefs without reservations and invite inquiry. May God bless us all as we continue to learn. Acceleration
The Wilson Seventh-day Adventist Junior Academy admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, or national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and other school administered programs. No child will be permitted to enroll in Grade 1 who will not have reached the age of six by December 1. It should be understood that every student who presents himself for admission to the school thereby pledges to observe willingly all its regulations, to uphold the Christian principles upon which the school is operated, and to the best of his/her ability, perform all school duties assigned to him/her. It is also understood that to break his/her pledge forfeits his membership, and if he/she is retained in the school, it is only at the discretion of the faculty and of the school board. This Seventh-day Adventist school has not been established for the purpose of offering special education, and is, therefore, unable to accept pupils who have serious scholastic or behavioral problems or who are mentally handicapped, without the prior approval of the teacher, administration, and school board. AIMS
AND OBJECTIVES OF THE SCHOOL To
instill a knowledge and love of God in the mind of every student. CHARACTER To

HOME To help every student have a better understanding of his/her relationship to the home circle, and to realize that love is the motivating force that holds the home together. HEALTH AND RECREATION To teach and practice the principles of health and temperance, knowing there is a direct relationship between the mental, the spiritual, and the physical. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE To
teach the student the value of concentration and application. WITNESSING AND COMMUNITY To instill an understanding of how good citizens should conduct themselves and how to portray true Christianity through daily living and community service. Acceleration
ATTENDANCE 1. If it is necessary for the student to be absent or tardy, the parent should write a note of explanation to the teacher. Such a note does not excuse the child but in many cases promotes understanding between teacher and home. 2. A school calendar will be given to each family. It if is necessary for your child to miss several days of school, please make arrangements with the teacher at least two weeks before the absence. 3. As weather permits, recess and P.E. will be held outside. Fresh air and exercise are vital to the learning process. All students are expected to participate. If there is a physical reason that this requirement would jeopardize a student's health, it is necessary to have a signed note from the doctor indicating limitations and duration. 4. Extreme emergencies, sickness or death in the family are considered the only legitimate excuses for absence. 5. When it is necessary to close school because of bad weather, our policy is to close when the Carney school does. Scheduled closings are announced on local radio stations. 6.
We welcome visitors to our school. Children may not come unless As a rule, students should not take two grades in one year. The unusually capable student should enrich his work by wider study and experience rather than to accelerate. We recommend that when a child has been kept out of school until the age of seven or eight, he may be accelerated by the school in counsel with the superintendent, in the event that it is shown by maturity and achievement tests that he is capable of handling a higher grade. We recommend that the following principles be kept in mind in this matter: 1. The general practice will be for the average student to complete one grade each year. 2. A broad program of enrichment is better than a program of acceleration. 3. When a student does not enter a formal school program until seven to nine years of age, accelerations during the first three years of school experience may be advisable, such acceleration to be only with the counsel and approval of the conference superintendent or supervisor. The decision is to be based on evidence of the child's mental maturity, his readiness for accelerations, capacity for achievement and social adjustment. Acceleration
COOPERATION "Parents, when the church school teacher tries to train and discipline your children that they may gain eternal life, do not, in their presence, criticize his actions even though you think him to be severe. If you desire them to give their hearts to the Savior, cooperate with the teacher's efforts for their salvation." Counsels to Teachers, p, 154
A physical examination is required of all students entering a Michigan school for the first time and at grades K or 1, 5, and 9. All parents of school children are members of the Home and School Organization. They are cordially invited to participate in the programs of the school. Students wishing to make calls must get permission from the principal. For each call, the student will be charged 25 cents. (Exceptions will be determined by the principal.) All long-distance calls must be paid for by the calling party. Incoming calls for students should be limited to those circumstances of urgent necessity. Acceleration
Regulations
not in print which are adopted by the faculty or board during the
school year and are announced to the students have the same validity
as those published in the policy book. 1. Students shall go to and from school in an orderly manner, arriving and departing at a properly scheduled time. 2. Students shall remain on the school grounds from the time of arrival until the time of departure. Any exception must be authorized by the principal. 3. Students shall practice the principles of Christian moral ethics, fair play and courtesy in all school relationships. They must abstain from all forms of bad behavior. Their language must be above reproach and the use of alcohol, tobacco, or drugs in all forms is strictly prohibited. 4. Students shall dress in a modest, healthful manner, characterized by simplicity, neatness, and cleanliness. Hair should be neat and clean. Students shall refrain from wearing jewelry. Neither boys nor girls should wear their clothing too tight. Athletic attire such as sweats, jerseys, mesh tops, though they may be modest and healthful, are not considered appropriate attire for school. Likewise, sleeveless garments, or garments exposing the midriff area, for both boys and girls, would be inappropriate. It is also desirous that girls refrain from masculine type clothing. Wording or pictures not positively showing Christian values are inappropriate. Grubby, ragged or torn clothing or shoes should not be worn. "A person's character is judged by his style of dress. A refined taste, a cultivated mind, will be revealed in a choice of simple and appropriate attire". Education, p. 248 "Self
denial in dress is a part of our Christian duty. To dress plainly
and abstain from display of jewelry and ornaments of every kind is
in keeping with our faith." Child Guidance, p. 442 6. Undue attention to the opposite sex shall be discouraged. 7. Any pupil who defaces, damages, or destroys school property shall be liable to discipline, according to the nature of the offense. Parents shall be responsible for replacement costs. 8. Students who hold a valid driver's license may bring a road licensed vehicle to school providing they park it in the parking lot upon arrival, make no unauthorized use of it during the school day and use it in a manner that insures safety to all. Students using a licensed vehicle for transportation need a consent form signed by their parents and approved by the principal. 10. No medications, including cough drops, are to be brought to school without a note from a physician or parent. Teachers cannot dispense medications without the parent providing both the medication and written permission for its use. Acceleration
The infraction of any of the foregoing policies may result in disciplinary action in accordance with the following procedure as recommended by the school board: STEP 1: The teacher should use proper disciplinary action to maintain order in the classroom or at other school activities. Step 2: If unacceptable behavior continues, the teacher should request a conference with the parents and solicit their help. STEP 3: The teacher should take the student in question to the principal and explain the problem. It should be discussed and a solution be sought. STEP 4: If the problem persists, the teacher should take the student to the principal again. At this time the principal should discuss the problem with the student. (The student could be dismissed. If the parent is not at home, the student is to stay in school.) The principal should call the parent that evening and explain the problem. A time to meet for a parent-teacher-principal meeting should be arranged to discuss the problem before the student can be re-admitted. STEP 5: If the problem continues and the student is dismissed again, the student and parent will be asked to meet with the principal, school board chairman, and pastor. STEP 6: If the student continues to be a problem, the teacher should take the student to the principal and explain any further developments. The principal shall call the parents and inform them that the student is suspended. They must contact the school board chairman to set up a special meeting at which time the parents must meet with the board. The school board chairman should be notified of all third and fourth step disciplinary problems. Disciplinary problems of an extreme nature will be left to the discretion of the principal as to what steps are necessary. No patron of the school has the right to come to the school for the purpose of verbally attacking or haranguing the teacher either before the pupils or otherwise. If there is a problem, the patron should first discuss the matter privately with the teacher involved. If there is need for further discussion the patron should discuss it with the principal and then if necessary with the school board chairman. The board will be willing to hear legitimate complaints from a patron concerning the school or teacher, provided an earnest effort has been made previously by the patron and teacher to clear up the matter. When a parent does become disruptive at the school, the School Board (via the principal) will suspend their children and schedule a meeting with the board before the children can return. Acceleration
AT REGISTRATION; A non-refundable registration fee will be charged for each school year. An additional charge shall be made for lost textbooks or books that are misused.
Because parents are expected to support an eight percent combined budget, and that support is at times more than non-constituent tuition, it is recommended that for IRS purposes that the non-constituent tuition be used as your guideline. The law states that you cannot use moneys that go toward the education of your child or a specified child, for a tax deduction. Remember that your combined budget also supports the church program as a whole. Acceleration
SPECIAL REQUEST AND NEEDED COMMUNICATIONS 1. Students are allowed combination locks on their lockers after the combination is given to the teacher and recorded in the office. 2.
